UNSEEN APOLLO

1961 to 1972, NASA’s Apollo program mobilized 400,000 people and sent 27 men to travel around the Moon. 6 missions succeeded in landing there, and 12 men set foot on its surface. They carried out a number of scientific experiments and brought back 382 kg of rock. From Apollo 4 to Apollo 17, astronauts were also equipped with medium-format Hasselblad cameras, and bring back to Earth 145 film rolls containing 19,788 shots. During the 6 missions that land on the Moon, they take 13,887 pictures.
The initial aim of these photographs, put online and made freely available by NASA, was mainly scientific and political. UNSEEN APOLLO shows images that are more subjective or bear traces of the accidents inherent to the film medium, (colors are the original ones) but which together, reveal a beauty beyond the known reality.
For astronauts, doubt and hesitation were not allowed - Failure is not an option - and there was little room during their missions for dreams and contemplation.
In UNSEEN APOLLO, light becomes subject. Wonder is permitted, being lost is allowed; to disappear is possible.

De 1961 à 1972, le programme Apollo de la NASA mobilise 400 000 personnes et envoie 27 hommes vers la Lune. 6 missions réussissent à s’y poser et 12 hommes foulent sa surface. Ils effectuent nombre d’expériences scientifiques et ramènent 382 kg de roche, mais pas que. D’Apollo 4 à Apollo 17, les astronautes partent équipés d’appareils photographiques moyen format Hasselblad et ramènent sur Terre 145 pellicules contenant 19 788 prises de vue. Lors des 6 missions qui se posent sur la Lune, ils prennent 13 887 photographies.
L’objectif initial de ces photographies, mises en ligne et en accès libre par la NASA, était principalement scientifique et politique. UNSEEN APOLLO montre des images plus subjectives ou portant des traces d’accidents propres au médium argentique, (les couleurs sont celles d'origines) mais qui réassemblées, dévoilent une beauté au-delà du réel connu.
Pour les astronautes, le doute et l’hésitation n’étaient pas permis - Failure is not an option - et il y avait peu de place durant leurs missions pour le rêve et la contemplation.
Dans UNSEEN APOLLO, la lumière devient sujet ; s’émerveiller est permis, être perdu est permis ; disparaître est possible.
